Family Foods

It is important to introduce family foods when baby is developmentally ready. The World Health Organisation have looked at all the research and recommend that your baby needs only breast milk or formula milk for the first 6 months.

Signs that your baby is ready

1. Your baby can sit up alone and keep their head steady.

2. Your baby can co-ordinate eye, hand and mouth so that they can see the food, pick it up, and put it in their mouth themselves.

3. Baby is able to swallow food, before six months they push the food out with their tongue and there is more on their face than in their mouth!

These signs are not reliable

1. Baby wakes at night

2. Baby chew their fists

3. Your baby wants more milk

Introducing family foods is an important step in your baby's development. It should be a fun time with your baby exploring different textures and tastes although it can be messy!
