The MAS team provides assessment, diagnosis and support for people experiencing memory problems. If someone has a diagnosis of dementia, we will confirm what type, and offer treatment where possible.
If you have concerns about your memory, you can contact your GP, who will carry out a blood test and refer you to the Memory Gateway – a partnership between the Alzheimer’s Society and Dorset HealthCare. The Gateway will arrange an appointment (within two weeks) with a Memory Advisor from the Alzheimer’s Society to gather further information. If appropriate, you will then be referred to one of our MAS nurses for a full assessment, and see a specialist doctor if required. Some people require a brain scan before seeing the doctor to help confirm the diagnosis.
If you are diagnosed with a dementia, we can offer you advice and support and signpost you to other local support services. For some types of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s, we can also offer medication to try to help slow down the process of memory loss.
